Akon Lighting Africa
Founder of Akon Lighting Africa, Solektra International's mission is to respond to the African energy and water crises in order to support the long term economic development of the continent. With regards to energy, Solektra International has focused its efforts on providing clean, renewable and affordable solar solutions in rural and off-grid areas where most of the African population currently lives - changing one community at a time! Founded by Samba Bathily, Akon and Thione Niang and incorporated in New York and with offices in numerous African countries, Solektra International is one of a new generation of African businesses that are investing in driving growth and employment throughout Africa through public-private partnerships and education.
Solektra International has just inaugurated the first training institute fully dedicated to solar technologies, which will train a minimum of 200 skilled workers, technicians and engineers per year as of 2016. The company has developed an innovative prefinancing model which led to impactful results. End of 2015, after a year and half of operations, Solektra International was operational in 15 African countries - Mali, the Republic of Guinea, Benin, Senegal, Niger, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Congo Brazzaville, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Namibia and Madagascar - with a wide offer of solar equipment including solar street lamps, micro-grids and domestic kits. Over the next few years, Solektra International plans on expanding into over 20 additional African countries.
